Jets Fan Experiences Study

We conducted a research study with fans of the Winnipeg Jets throughout the 2021-2022 NHL season. Here's what we found.

What did we do?

We recruited 418 Jets fans to complete 3 online surveys throughout the 2021-2022 NHL Season.

What did we find?

The preliminary results show that

  • on average, levels of passion for being a Jets fan decreased over the course of the season.

  • fans with high levels of obsessive passion at the start of the season reported feeling more negative feelings while watching the Jets play at the end of the season.

  • fans with high levels of harmonious passion felt more positive feelings while watching the Jets play and were more satisfied with their social life throughout the season.

Why is this important?

  • Showing that passion decreases over time is important because, unlike emotional experiences, passion represents a relationship with an activity that is more central to people’s identities.

  • These findings support research with sport fans on the benefits of having high harmonious passion, and the downsides of having high obsessive passion.
